Shingles are the easiest thing to spot on your roof, but there are other elements of your roof that work together to keep rain, heat, and hail out of your home. When checking your shingles from the ground, you may notice if they’re lifted up, if some are missing, or if there are cracks and damage. Besides your shingles, it’s best to check your underlayment, flashings, mounted equipment, and gutters or downspouts. Should a storm hit, these could be points of failure.

  • Underlayment – This provides insulation and a layer of protection between the roof decking and the shingles. You want to check for holes, rips, or punctures.
  • Flashing – This waterproof material helps prevent water from pooling, diverting it away from corners, chimneys, mounted equipment, and down the roof. You want to triple-check they are correctly connected and sealed.
  • Mounted Equipment – You want to secure and seal anything that sits on the roof, like a satellite dish, antenna, and solar panels. 
  • Gutters or Downspouts – Clean existing debris from gutters (continue periodically through hurricane season) and extend the downspouts so water can flow away from your home.

Another quick note, you want to make sure skylights, chimneys, soffits, and vent pipes are tightly sealed. Wind can easily cause damage and lead to leaks or worse.

Metal or Tile Roofing Pre-Storm Checklist

Metal and tile roofs tend to hold up in severe weather conditions better than shingles. Metal roofs have been known to withstand 140 mph winds in uplift tests. Tile roofing is impact and wind-resistant and boasts a Class A Fire Rating, the highest possible rating. Regardless of a high rating, hurricanes force winds are destructive. So it’s essential to check for wear and tear, cracks, breaks, missing tiles (if a tile roof), and rusted fasteners (if a metal roof).
